With regular news reports about people dying or being permanently injured as a result of taking doctor-prescribed pharmaceuticals, many parents today are reluctant to give their children these toxic, chemical “medicines”. Children’s bodies and systems are much more sensitive and delicate than adults, calling for greater concern about how a child will react to synthetic chemical drugs. The predominant rationale in our current medical culture seems to be; ” if it wasn’t taught in med school, then it must not work”. So doctors tend to look upon homeopathic and natural remedies as primitive, apocryphal quackery and are far too willing to keep prescribing potentially harmful or even lethal drugs without even considering a safer, natural alternative.

I’m not saying that these doctors are willfully negligent, apathetic or evil. I’m just saying they simply don’t know any better. Universities receive a lot of research funding and donations from the pharmaceutical industry (this is so pharmaceutical corporations can swoop in later and basically steal their research data – but that’s a subject for another article) so including homeopathy in the curriculum for future MDs would not be in a university’s best interest. Similarly, hospitals are also for-profit entities which benefit greatly from their symbiotic relationships with Big Pharma.

Furthermore, the medical profession (as well as the public in general) places far too much blind faith in the FDA. Most people assume without question that “FDA Approved” means without a shadow of a doubt that a food or drug is SAFE for consumption, but few are aware of how deeply the pharmaceutical industry has infiltrated the agency and how far their influence reaches.

We have forgotten that nature provides everything that every living creature needs in order to survive and stay healthy. In fact, many synthetic pharmaceuticals are based on natural, organic compounds. There’s no need to invent synthetic analogs that have similar properties when the source already exists in nature… But then, you can’t patent and sell that for billions of dollars, can you?

Below are a handful of remedies very popular with parents. Grab a cosmetics sized bag or maybe an empty VHS case, and build a starter kit. Use the lower potencies, 6X, 6C, 10X, 30X, or 30C, for at-home treatment of acute symptoms. Dosing instructions are on the bottle.

1. Arnica – Often the remedy that transforms the skeptical into believers in homeopathy, nothing is quicker or more effective for physical trauma. Get both the pellets (internal use) and the gel/ointmnet (external use). 2. Aconitum napellus (Aconite) – Use for colds, fever, fear, and other sudden on-set ailments:
• Earache – painful, with a high fever
• Colds – sudden onset, runny nose that is watery, hot
• Fever – high fever, comes on suddenly, skin hot and dry
• Cough – sudden onset, dry, coupy cough
• Insomnia, when the child tosses and turns, kept awake by the fear of nightmares
• Use in first 24 hours of illness, not at the end
• Symptoms – watch for anxious look on the face, with perspiration Better from warmth & rest, worse from cold wind, weather

3. Calendula – One of the best remedies for skin. An antiseptic, use tincture, gel, spray, ointment, cream. Apply directly to wound, cut (not deep ones as it may heal top too quickly), burns, eczema, rash. Helps breakdown scar tissue, has some pain-reducing action, soothes canker sores, prevents pus, resists wound infection, soothes skin.

4. Chamomilla – Powerfully calming, it soothes restless, irritable children. For the child that must be held to be calmed. Use for:
• Colic – spasmodic pains that come and go, worse at night, warm
• Teething – irritable, may have diarrhea, red and tender gums, child refuses toys, food, drink. May or may not have fever.
• Earaches – sensitive to cold and noise, pain that makes child frantic
• Colds – watery, hot, runny nose that is also stuffed, difficulty sleeping
• Fever – alternates between feeling hot, cold
• Cough – dry, tickling, hoarseness, worse 9p.m. – midnight
• Look for anger, impatient, contrary, inconsolable, screaming and arching his back, hot feet, hypersensitive, sour smell to body functions

5. Nux vomica – for overindulgence. Helps the child that has prolonged mental stress, disappointment in not reaching goals, hyperactive, overanxious, impatient, competitive, overexcitable. For the child that thrives on rebellion. Use for:
• Upset tummy/indigestion – gastric reflux with cramping and stomach pains, hiccups, flatulence, constipation
• Headache and nausea, loathing for food
• Diarrhea – from over feeding, or when baby strains but only produces small amount of stool
• Runny nose during the day, stuffiness at night
• Look for concurrent headache, indigestion, emotional upset. Things need to be a certain way, and impatient to be well.

6. Pulsatilla – No other remedy is used more often for children. Match emotional indications first; if they fit, use even if physical symptoms don’t fit. A common constitutional remedy, usually for girls, the keynote symptoms are emotional, sensitive, moody children who crave attention. Can be shy, weepy, clingy. Often has complaints after eating rich or fatty foods. Use for:
• Earache – worse at night, may have yellow-green discharge from ears, hearing muffled
• Colds – Nose sometimes stopped, sometimes runny with yellow – green mucous that doesn’t irritate skin
• Conjunctivitis – yellow-green discharge from eye
• Fever – can feel child is chilled but she still wants open air, no thirst
• Cough – dry cough at night, loose during the day
• Upset stomach with bloating and gas, abdominal distention in children who are not thirsty. Better from standing and moving, worse resting, in the evenings.
• Look for changeable symptoms, moods
• Better from cold food, complaints improve outside/open air – worse from stuffy rooms, hot weather
• Note: sepia is the remedy to give the caregiver of a pulsatilla child when they feel overwhelmed.

Individuals often respond differently to disease, and in homeopathy this individual totality of symptoms is important in finding the right remedy. One thing that makes it easier to find the right remedy is to try a blend. The Link Between Vaccines and the Increase of Severe Food Allergies

There has been a rampant increase in food allergies over the last several years, which nobody seemed to be able to explain, but one concerned mother conducted the research and found that it traces back to vaccines. What’s worse is that vaccine manufacturers know this!

(Opposing Views) In 2002, 1 in 125 young children had peanut allergy in the US. 2008 one in every 17 children under the age of 3 has food allergy.

Just recently a new book hit the market: The History of the Peanut Allergy Epidemic by Heather Frazier. Heather is a parent of a child with the fatal peanut allergy. In her own words:

“…when we arrived at the ER and I announced that my son had eaten peanut butter I could not fathom the response of the nurses. They leapt across desks, caps flying, yelling, wheeling, snatching up the boy, jabbing his little arm with needles, stabbing an IV into the back of his hand. Screaming now with fear and confusion, he was strapped down so he couldn’t move, pumped with drugs, hooked to monitors and drips. I stood behind the team of four or six or there might have been 10 doctors and nurses, whatever the exact number it seemed totally out of proportion to my announcement that we had just eaten peanut butter. How could a food I had eaten for years cause such a reaction?

“…A steady increase of peanut allergic children and concerned parents joined school communities across the province, the country. Lunch bag inspections became common. Any peanut related food, granola bar or sandwich was confiscated and sent home with a cautionary note. Initially, parents insisted that the peanut butter ban had violated their rights. Soon, however, everyone was forced to accommodate this new generation of allergic children. There were just too many of them.

“At this point, at last, I started to think. What was going on? This allergy had developed in hundreds of thousands of children, not just mine – it had grown from an infrequent occurrence in 1990 to 1.5% of the US population, 4.5 million people by 2009. Neither coincidence nor genetic fluke could explain these numbers.

“I started to dig. I wondered if the epidemic had grown from some unfortunate but perfect constellation of conditions and events. And in these circumstances, perhaps I too played a part. My inquiries became the first book on the History of the Peanut Allergy Epidemic.”

Heather through her research came to the conclusion that peanut oil in vaccines was triggering the epidemic of fatal peanut allergies.

My research came to the same conclusion but I found out even more.

THE MAJORITY OF SERIOUS FOOD ALLERGIES ARE DIRECTLY CAUSED BY VACCINATIONS and most of the rest are caused by other medications such as antibiotics.

Heather has more credentials to put after her name than I do. She is a historian. Me, I’m a grandmother who can read and add 1+1. My credentials are all that you need to determine the cause of food allergies.

I was just curious when I started my research. I found it weird that fatal peanut allergies were becoming a huge problem in the UK. I bought peanut butter by the five pound pail every month or so. How can this wonderful food suddenly be deadly to children?

I found patents on the Internet for vaccine adjuvants and culture mediums that shocked me when I read them. It seems that medicines and vaccines are not subject to laws requiring full disclosure of ingredients. Every food oil known to man can be mixed together and added to vaccines as an ingredient of the adjuvant or as a diluent. And it is a trade secret which means that for any one in the vaccine industry or government cannot reveal this fact to the public.

Culture mediums are also interesting reading. Food waste is used to grow the little buggers up until the last feeding. At that point it is assumed that the bacteria ate all the food protein and a “safe” food is added to the concoction that will not cause problems when injected into babies.

I found proof that injecting food protein into animals causes fatal food allergies. That fact has been known since 1839!

I found food allergies in all the animals that are getting injected with vaccines. A wild elephant has wheat allergy – it had been vaccinated. Dogs are getting peanut allergies and other food allergies.

I found a ridiculous study done that “proved that Thai children don’t get peanut allergies” in spite of peanuts being a large part of their diet. “As stated earlier, it is possible that we dismissed sick young children and those with atopic tendency from our study. However, lack of peanut reaction among young children was observed in the report from Singapore despite relatively common allergy skin reactions to peanuts among Singaporean children”. First thing they did was eliminate any child that had a skin reaction from the study. I searched and found an article from a Singapore newspaper “A worrying trend is revealed by the relatively high prevalence of peanut hypersensitivity, now constituting almost a third of patients presenting for the diagnosis and treatment of food allergy in KK Hospital, Singapore.”

I found an article about Israel that said they don’t have peanut allergies but peanuts are a significant part of their diet. It’s true. The children in Israel don’t have peanut allergies unless their parents move to the UK and get vaccinated there. In Israel they are troubled by serious sesame allergies. And, guess what! Sesame oil is used as a diluent in vaccines, too. They get their vaccines from a different manufacturer than we do.

There were just a handful of vaccines around in the late 1800′s. The culture medium was milk. The first recorded case of milk allergy was 1901.

1919 a doctor substituted oil for the saline in vaccines. 1920 was the first recorded case of nut allergy.

I was a kid in the 1950′s. There were no serious food allergies among my classmates at that time. Nobody had to sit out of the lunchroom as kids do today. There were only a couple of vaccinations that kids got. But today, I was shocked by the number given to babies and children. Over 50 vaccinations by age 12! To get that many vaccines into children they now give them in “combination” shots.

In 1997 1 child in 250 had peanut allergy. 1999 was when they started giving combination vaccines. In 2000 children received 33 vaccines BEFORE they entered school. By 2002 peanut allergy had doubled. 1 child in 125 now has peanut allergy.

2008 1 child in 17 under the age of three has a food allergy.

You may think that the food allergy epidemic doesn’t affect you. If it doesn’t now, it soon will. I just talked with a friend of mine who works at a correctional facility. One of the inmates has a deadly fish allergy. They can no longer serve fish because even though this inmate is in a closed building over a football field’s length away from the kitchen, if they cook fish, he goes into anaphylaxis. I know of a child who lives near Lake Erie who also has a fatal fish allergy. Peanuts are being banned from airline flights and schools because just the SMELL of peanuts is enough to kill these fatally allergic children.

And Monsanto is coming to the rescue with a genetically engineered peanut. Frankenfood to the rescue! But that won’t solve the problem. The newly genetically engineered peanut will be used in the vaccines, too. I found genetically altered soybeans listed on a patent. Even if it did solve the peanut allergy problem, what about the sesame allergies, soy allergies, casein allergies, etc.?

How can anyone justify the risk factor of getting diptheria, flu, or mumps with a 1 in 17 chance of getting a serious food allergy?

In 2007 “A 20-year-old female with documented Brazil nut allergy developed urticaria and dyspnea after unprotected intercourse with her boyfriend who had earlier consumed Brazil nuts.”

White House “Kill List” – New York Times Exposes Obama’s Control of Drone Attacks Overseas

A stunning report by the New York Times details how involved our Peace Prize President is in selecting victims of U.S. drone attacks. Acting with impunity, Obama insists on poring over mountains of suspected terrorist’s profiles and selecting each victim himself, compiling an extensive “kill list” that an official claims contains several American citizens.

(Antiwar.com) It was President Obama who claimed the right to order the summary execution of American citizens abroad without ever charging them with a crime. This was carried out not only in the assassination of outspoken cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, killed on the claim that his sermons critical of US policy were “recruiting” terrorists, but also Awlaki’s 16-year-old son, who was never even accused of this sort of tenuous link to criminality.

Obama’s current kill list is still a closely guarded secret, but the article revealed that it contained several Americans, including an unidentified 17-year-old American girl that the president is hoping to knock off at some point. The best the article can conclude is that Obama’s past comments suggest he probably feels bad about ordering these killings, but that clearly isn’t stopping him.

Does anything about this sound downright psychopathic to anybody? It’s no secret that the president has no compunction against assassinating U.S. citizens without the benefit of due process, and U.S. drone strikes have been responsible for the countless, horrible deaths of civilians and children in the Middle East. The only thing that’s more horribly unsettling than the fact that Obama has appointed himself the authority to decide who lives and who dies – ANYWHERE in the world – is the fact that he wants to do it here in America as well.

(New York Times) WASHINGTON — This was the enemy, served up in the latest chart from the intelligence agencies: 15 Qaeda suspects in Yemen with Western ties. The mug shots and brief biographies resembled a high school yearbook layout. Several were Americans. Two were teenagers, including a girl who looked even younger than her 17 years.

President Obama, overseeing the regular Tuesday counterterrorism meeting of two dozen security officials in the White House Situation Room, took a moment to study the faces. It was Jan. 19, 2010, the end of a first year in office punctuated by terrorist plots and culminating in a brush with catastrophe over Detroit on Christmas Day, a reminder that a successful attack could derail his presidency. Yet he faced adversaries without uniforms, often indistinguishable from the civilians around them.

“How old are these people?” he asked, according to two officials present. “If they are starting to use children,” he said of Al Qaeda, “we are moving into a whole different phase.”

It was not a theoretical question: Mr. Obama has placed himself at the helm of a top secret “nominations” process to designate terrorists for kill or capture, of which the capture part has become largely theoretical. He had vowed to align the fight against Al Qaeda with American values; the chart, introducing people whose deaths he might soon be asked to order, underscored just what a moral and legal conundrum this could be.

Mr. Obama is the liberal law professor who campaigned against the Iraq war and torture, and then insisted on approving every new name on an expanding “kill list,” poring over terrorist suspects’ biographies on what one official calls the macabre “baseball cards” of an unconventional war. When a rare opportunity for a drone strike at a top terrorist arises — but his family is with him — it is the president who has reserved to himself the final moral calculation.

“He is determined that he will make these decisions about how far and wide these operations will go,” said Thomas E. Donilon, his national security adviser. “His view is that he’s responsible for the position of the United States in the world.” He added, “He’s determined to keep the tether pretty short.”

Nothing else in Mr. Obama’s first term has baffled liberal supporters and confounded conservative critics alike as his aggressive counterterrorism record. His actions have often remained inscrutable, obscured by awkward secrecy rules, polarized political commentary and the president’s own deep reserve.

In interviews with The New York Times, three dozen of his current and former advisers described Mr. Obama’s evolution since taking on the role, without precedent in presidential history, of personally overseeing the shadow war with Al Qaeda.

They describe a paradoxical leader who shunned the legislative deal-making required to close the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba, but approves lethal action without hand-wringing. While he was adamant about narrowing the fight and improving relations with the Muslim world, he has followed the metastasizing enemy into new and dangerous lands. When he applies his lawyering skills to counterterrorism, it is usually to enable, not constrain, his ferocious campaign against Al Qaeda — even when it comes to killing an American cleric in Yemen, a decision that Mr. Obama told colleagues was “an easy one.”

His first term has seen private warnings from top officials about a “Whac-A-Mole” approach to counterterrorism; the invention of a new category of aerial attack following complaints of careless targeting; and presidential acquiescence in a formula for counting civilian deaths that some officials think is skewed to produce low numbers.

The administration’s failure to forge a clear detention policy has created the impression among some members of Congress of a take-no-prisoners policy. And Mr. Obama’s ambassador to Pakistan, Cameron P. Munter, has complained to colleagues that the C.I.A.’s strikes drive American policy there, saying “he didn’t realize his main job was to kill people,” a colleague said.

Beside the president at every step is his counterterrorism adviser, John O. Brennan, who is variously compared by colleagues to a dogged police detective, tracking terrorists from his cavelike office in the White House basement, or a priest whose blessing has become indispensable to Mr. Obama, echoing the president’s attempt to apply the “just war” theories of Christian philosophers to a brutal modern conflict.

Demand the Truth About Fukushima – End the U.S. Media Blackout

Due to a deliberate media blackout, Americans remain blissfully unaware of the worsening nuclear crisis that continues at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, and the growing risk it poses to the U.S. As Japan teeters on the edge of an horrific disaster of incalculable proportions, diplomats and the media claim that the situation is little to be concerned about (nothing here to see folks… Move along). Yet workers still struggle to affect repairs and avert meltdown in a facility that was built on the cheap, with inadequate safety measures. Oh, and let us not forget, the enormous pile of Uranium fuel rods they’re storing in reactor 4!

Americans have a right to know about radiological dangers that may be drifting in from the ocean (both airborn AND in the water!) Folks living on the west coast may have already been exposed to harmful levels of radiation without even knowing it. There have been reports that a giant plume of radiation has already been emitted from Fukushima, on a course for the U.S. and other countries, but was silenced in the media. I’ve heard stories of California residents picking up higher than normal levels of radiation with their personal detection equipment (dosimeters, Geiger counters) and many are getting worried about what it would mean for the U.S. and humanity as a whole if the worst were to occur in Japan.

I wish this was going to be a minor fight, but that isn’t going to be the case. General Electric and our corporate-controlled Fascist Mainstream News Media have dug-in on this matter and have no intention of speaking the truth to the United States or anywhere else that this crisis will ultimately affect. As we stated above, criminal laws have been broken and we cannot expect any type of resolution from Barack Obama as he places his “Forward” campaign agenda that again, refuses to look back upon our past criminal culpability and his Administration’s abject failure to charge George. W. Bush and his cohorts with War Crimes in The United States of America. President Obama is a rank Corporatist/Fascist and to be frank, it will take the International Community, led by people of integrity and honesty to lead us through one of the worst humanitarian crisis’s that mankind has every witnessed or had to deal with. On May 12, 2012, we published an “Open Letter to N.A.T.O and The U. N. Security Council Regarding (the) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster & Subsequent Danger To Humanity” which received good reviews and a lot of traffic. Hepatitis B

I understand that 60 percent of patients who are vaccinated for Hepatitis B will lose detectable antibodies to Hepatitis B within 12 years. I understand that in 1996 only 54 cases of Hepatitis B were reported to the CDC in the 0-1 year age group. I understand that in the VAERS, there were 1,080 total reports of adverse reactions from Hepatitis B vaccine in 1996 in the 0-1 year age group, with 47 deaths reported.

I understand that 50 percent of patients who contract Hepatitis B develop no symptoms after exposure. I understand that 30 percent will develop only flu-like symptoms and will have lifetime immunity. I understand that 20 percent will develop the symptoms of the disease, but that 95 percent will fully recover and have lifetime immunity.

I understand that 5 percent of the patients who are exposed to Hepatitis B will become chronic carriers of the disease. I understand that 75 percent of the chronic carriers will live with an asymptomatic infection and that only 25 percent of the chronic carriers will develop chronic liver disease or liver cancer, 10-30 years after the acute infection. The following scientific studies have been performed to demonstrate the safety of the Hepatitis B vaccine in children under the age of 5 years.

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes – The True Meaning of Memorial Day

To many Americans, Memorial Day means Barbecues, Parades, Sales and the unofficial start of the summer season. Oh yeah, and three days off work. Studies have shown that a vast majority of Americans have no idea what the true meaning of Memorial day is… fewer still know the origins of the holiday.

Memorial Day – then called “Decoration Day” for the custom of decorating the graves of the fallen at Arlington Cemetery with wreaths) was officially proclaimed by General John Logan (General Order No. 11) on May 5th, 1868 for the remembrance of the honored dead of the Civil War, and was first observed on May 30th 1868. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890, the rest of the northern states had followed suit.

The former Confederate states refused to observe the day of remembrance (though they observed several of their own since before the Civil War ended. It wasn’t until after WWI, when the holiday included remembrance of all war dead, not just the Civil War, did the southern states join the rest of the country in observance.

Congress’ “National Holiday Act” of 1971 moved the holiday from May 30th to the last Monday in May (for the 3-day weekend). Many feel that since then, much of the original, solemn meaning of the holiday has been lost.

I agree. And it’s a damn shame.

I’m not saying that I think there should be church bells tolling durges all day, as we all carefully maintain a feigned state of mourning until Tuesday. There’s nothing wrong with having fun on Memorial Day. Just take some time to remember those who sacrificed themselves so that we could be free. Our freedoms were won not in the courts, on in a bureaucrat’s office, or the in the halls of Congress. They were won on a battlefield.

Take a quick inventory of all the reasons why you’re grateful to live in America and remember those who died to defend them. Teach children and anyone else who has no clue the true meaning of Memorial Day and pass it on.

In 2000, Congress established the “National Moment of Remembrance” . This resolution asks Americans, wherever they are, to pause at 3 p.m. local time “and informally observe a moment of quite remembrance.” I hope everyone who reads this will join in me in this moment of silent reverence.

To those who have served, I thank you, To those who gave their lives so that I could be free, I honor you.

How to Communicate if the Government Shuts Down the Internet

With all the bills that Congress has been proposing lately to control the internet, and considering what happened in Egypt last year, it got me thinking about what would happen in the U.S. if there were massive civil unrest, as a result of an economic collapse, grid collapse, martial law or a complete suspension of the Constitution. I have no doubt that the government would attempt to shut down internet access in the America just as they did in Egypt.

This is not so much a “survival” communications issue, but one of relaying information to large groups over long distances here in the U.S., and making sure that the outside world knows what’s going on here if the darkest days of America were to come to pass.

I came across this interesting article on Liberty News Online . It has some good suggestions for communications in the event that the internet gets blocked in the United States. Some of these methods are well known to preppers and survivalists (like CB and HAM radio), while some others (like using a Nintendo DS) I was completely unaware of.

Bear in mind, this is not a grid-down or TEOTWAWKI communications article. Many of these methods require electricity or a semblance of an operational infrastructure. These are just alternatives methods of getting information out to large groups of people and/or communicating over long distances should the internet become unavailable to us.

(Liberty News Online) Scenario: Your government is displeased with the communication going on in your location and pulls the plug on your internet access, most likely by telling the major ISPs to turn off service.

This is what happened in Egypt Jan. 25 prompted by citizen protests, with sources estimating that the Egyptian government cut off approximately 88 percent of the country’s internet access. What do you do without internet? Step 1: Stop crying in the corner. Then start taking steps to reconnect with your network. Here’s a list of things you can do to keep the communication flowing.

Print out your contact list, so your phone numbers aren’t stuck in the cloud. Some mail services like Gmail allow you to export your online contact list in formats that are more conducive to paper, such as CSV or Vcard, and offer step-by-step guides on how to do this.

BROADCAST ON THE RADIO:

CB Radio: Short for “Citizens Band” radio, these two-way radios allow communication over short distances on 40 channels. You can pick one up for about $20 to $50 at Radio Shack, and no license is required to operate it.

Ham radio: To converse over these radios, also known as “amateur radios,” you have to obtain an operator’s license from the FCC. Luckily, other Wired How-To contributors have already explained exactly what you need to do to get one and use it like a pro. However, if the President declares a State of Emergency, use of the radio could be extremely restricted or prohibited.

GMRS: The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a licensed land-mobile FM UHF radio service in the United States available for short-distance two-way communication. It is intended for use by an adult individual who possesses a valid GMRS license, as well as his or her immediate family members… They are more expensive than the walkie talkies typically found in discount electronics stores, but are higher quality.

Family Radio Service: The Family Radio Service (FRS) is an improved walkie talkie radio system authorized in the United States since 1996. This personal radio service uses channelized frequencies in the ultra high frequency (UHF) band. It does not suffer the interference effects found on citizens’ band (CB) at 27 MHz, or the 49 MHz band also used by cordless phones, toys, and baby monitors.

Microbroadcasting: Microbroadcasting is the process of broadcasting a message to a relatively small audience. This is not to be confused with low-power broadcasting. In radio terms, it is the use of low-power transmitters to broadcast a radio signal over the space of a neighborhood or small town. Similarly to pirate radio, microbroadcasters generally operate without a license from the local regulation body, but sacrifice range in favor of using legal power limits.

Packet Radio Back to the ’90s: There do exist shortwave packet-radio modems. These are also excruciatingly slow, but may get your e-mail out. Like ham radio above it requires a ham radio license because they operate on ham radio frequencies.

TELEPHONE:

Set up a phone tree: According to the American Association of University Women, a phone tree is “a prearranged, pyramid-shaped system for activating a group of people by telephone” that can “spread a brief message quickly and efficiently to a large number of people.” Dig out that contact list you printed out to spread the message down your pyramid of contacts.

Enable Twitter via SMS: Though the thought of unleashing the Twitter fire hose in your text message inbox may seem horrifying, it would be better than not being able to connect to the outside world at all. The Twitter website has full instructions on how to redirect tweets to your phone.

Call to Tweet: A small team of engineers from Twitter, Google and SayNow, a company Google acquired recently, made this idea a reality. It’s already live and anyone can tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers ( +16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855 ) and the service will instantly tweet the message using the hashtag #egypt. No Internet connection is required. People can listen to the messages by dialing the same phone numbers or going to the Twitter account, speak2tweet.

Alex Jones and infowars.com have a telephone number for people to listen to his radio show by phone, in case the internet goes down, or if you don’t have internet. The phone in listen line is 512-646-5000 .

FAX:

If you need to quickly send and receive documents with lengthy or complex instructions, phone conversations may result in misunderstandings, and delivering the doc by foot would take forever. Brush the dust off that bulky old machine, establish a connection by phone first with the recipient to make sure his machine is hooked up, then fax away.

You may not need a fax machine to send or receive faxes if your computer has a dial-up fax application.

NON-VIRTUAL BULLETIN BOARD

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the virtual world that we forget about resources available in the real world. Physical bulletin boards have been used for centuries to disseminate information and don’t require electricity to function. If you are fortunate enough to be getting information from some other source why not share it with your friends and neighbors with your own bulletin board? Cork, magnetic and marker bulletin boards are as close as your nearest dime store and can be mounted just about anywhere. And if push comes to shove you can easily make your own with scrap wood lying around the house.

Getting back onlineWhile it might be relatively easy for a government to cut connections by leveraging the major ISPs, there are some places they wouldn’t get to so readily, like privately-owned networks and independent ISPs.

FIND THE PRIVATELY RUN ISPs

In densely populated areas, especially in central business districts and city suburbs there are multiple home WiFi networks overlapping each other, some secure, some not. If there is no internet, open up your WiFi by removing password protection: If enough people do this it’s feasible to create a totally private WiFi service outside government control covering the CBD, and you can use applications that run Bonjour (iChat on Mac for example) to communicate with others on the open network and send and receive documents. **needs more clarification

If you are a private ISP, it’s your time to shine. Consider allowing open access to your Wi-Fi routers to facilitate communication of people around you until the grid is back online.

RETURN TO DIAL-UP

According to an article in the BBC about old tech’s role in the Egyptian protests, “Dial-up modems are one of the most popular routes for Egyptians to get back online. Long lists of international numbers that connect to dial-up modems are circulating in Egypt thanks to net activists We Re-Build, Telecomix and others.”

Dial-up can be slow. Often, there is a lightweight mobile version of a site that you can load from your desktop browser quickly despite the limitations of dial-up. Examples: mobile.twitter.com, m.facebook.com, m.gmail.com.

AD-HOC NETWORKING

Most wireless routers, PCs, laptops, and even some ultramobile devices like cellphones have the ability to become part of an “ad hoc” network, where different “nodes” (all of the devices on the network) share the responsibility of transmitting data with one another. These networks can become quite large, and are often very easy to set up. If used properly by a tech-savvy person, such networks can be used to host temporary websites and chat rooms. There are many internet tutorials on the internet for ad hoc networking, so feel free to google some.

Apple computers tend to have very accessible ad hoc functionality built in, including a pre-installed chat client (iChat) that will automatically set up an ad hoc “Rendezvous” chatroom among anybody on the network, without the need for an external service like AIM or Skype. Ad hoc network-hosting functionality is built in to the Wi-Fi menu.

Windows computers have several third-party ad hoc chat applications available (such as Trillian) and setting up an ad hoc Wi-Fi network is almost as simple as on a Mac.

Linux operating systems, of course, have plenty of third-party apps available, and most distros have ad hoc network-creation support built in.

BUILD LARGE BRIDGED WIRELESS NETWORK

Using popular wireless access point devices like a Linksys WRT54G, you can create a huge wireless bridged network — effectively creating a Local Area Network (LAN), or a private Internet that can be utilized by all users within range using a Wi-Fi enabled device.

You can also link multiple devices together wirelessly, extending the range of your network. Most access points will cover a 100 meter area and if your wireless device is built to support the 802.11n wireless standard, you will get almost a 500 meter coverage area for each access point.

NINTENDO DS

A used DS family device can be purchased inexpensively. In addition to wi-fi, the DS supports its own wireless protocols. Using Pictochat, it is possible to chat with nearby DS users without having any DS games. Unfortunately, the range is quite short.

Some games, such as the fourth generation Pokemon games, support mail items. Thus you can send your message under the guise of just playing a game. Mail items can be sent through the Internet if you can get on the net and you and your partner(s) have each other’s friend codes.

The original DS and the DS Lite do support the Opera web browser, but finding the game card and memory pack may be very difficult. Starting with the DSi, Opera is downloadable.

INTRANET

Your computer has the ability to set up your own INTRANET. This was done BEFORE the internet was popularized in two ways: Your computer dialed up other computers and sent them the contents of a message board, or local people people dialed into your computer. A nationwide system can be set up this way with a central location sending to many cities then each city sending out the info locally.

BECOME UNTRACEABLE

If you’re going to post government secrets on your work-around site, you may want to set up an untraceable account. Really, you only need a mail drop, an assumed name, a prepaid credit card you can get at many stores to set up service.

GET SATELLITE ACCESS

You can have very, very slow internet if you have something similiar to an Iridium phone, which would allow you to do dial up at 2400 baud, which at least gives you e-mail. This will also work when your government has shut down GSM and telephone access, and will work pretty much anywhere on the planet. If you’re in the right place, get yourself KA-SAT access which is satellite broadband and will not be routed through any internet exchange that certain local governments may monitor or block (unless that government is part of EU or er … Uncle Sam.

BACK TO BASICS

Make some noise: Have an air horn or other loud instrument handy. It may just come down to being able to alert people in your local geographic area, who would otherwise be unaware of an emergency. You may also want to learn a bit about Morse code and have a cheat sheet available.
