mylar-bucket

Continuing in the three-part food storage series by Survival Woman from BackdoorSurvival.com, here’s part II:

Today I would like to help unravel the mystique of the Mylar bag. As with the ubiquitous oxygen absorber, the mention of Mylar bags brings up as many questions as there are answers. We have all heard that the best way to store dry goods for long term storage is in a Mylar bag but what exactly is a Mylar bag and, more specifically, how are they used?

What is a Mylar bag?

First and foremost, the term “Mylar” is actually one of many trade names for a polyester film called BoPet. For the technically inclined and the curious, that stands for “Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate”. This film was developed by DuPont in the 1950’s and was first used by NASA.

Since then, many uses for Mylar have been embraced due to its high tensile strength and its moisture, light, gas and aroma barrier properties. Mylar is a also good insulator against electrical disturbances.

For all of these reasons and more, Mylar bags are considered a gold standard when it comes to long term food storage.

Okay. I get it. What size and thickness do I need?

The two most commonly used sizes for storing food products are the one gallon size (about 10” x 14”) and the five gallon size (about 20” x 30”).

The gallon sized bags are ideal for grains, dried powered foods, spices, hard candy, salts, and other baking ingredients. In addition the gallon bags are useful for protecting valuables including ammo, and medical supplies. When shopping for gallon sized bags, you should look for a thickness of 3.5 to 4 mil.

The large, 5 gallon sized bag is typically used to line a 5 or 6 gallon plastic bucket. The bag is filled with product then sealed before closing the bucket up with a lid. The combination of a Mylar bag inside a plastic bucket makes an unbeatable barrier against the woes and ravages of time, moisture, light and most important, rodents. The bag alone will not keep out the rodents! For that you will need a bucket.

Because of the weight of its contents, the thickness of a 5 gallon Mylar bag should be 4.5 mil or more. And, just so you know, the thicker the bag, the tighter the weave of the polyester – that is what gives it its strength. As a matter of fact, you will find bags that are 7 mil and even thicker but for most uses, 3.5 mil to 5 mil will work just fine.

Tips for Sealing a Mylar bag

Sealing a Mylar bag can be a challenge but with a little practice, you will find the process simple and efficient. You can use a clothes iron alone, or a with a FoodSaver and some extra tubing. But, for an easier and less costly solution, try using use a hair straightening iron which will only set you back $20 or so.

Here are some other tips:

Do not overfill the bag. Remember that your oxygen absorber will suck out the oxygen, leaving only nitrogen in the extra space.
Only seal the top inch of your bag. If you need to cut open the bag to remove product, you have the space to seal the bag back up again. Just don’t forget to add a fresh oxygen absorber.
If you are sealing up a powdery substance such as flour, be sure to wipe the inside edges first so that any residual dust is removed. This will insure a good seal.

Check your newly sealed bags a few days after sealing. They should be noticeably compressed. If not, there is a likelihood that the seal was not good or a hole was poked in the Mylar. Give it another week and if is still is not compressed, cut it open and start over.
When sealing pasta or noodles, feel free to seal them in their original packaging. Cut a little hole in the package first, so that the oxygen absorber can do its job in removing every last bit of oxygen, even from the store packaging.

Remember, heat is your enemy regardless of the packaging. Store you packaged products below 85 degrees and preferably much lower than that.
What about Vacuum Sealed Bags?

Vacuum seal bags, such as those for the FoodSaver are a wonderful convenience and easy to use. But alas, they do not have the thickness nor the strength of Mylar bags and the may start to leak after 3 or 4 years. That said, they are still a great alternative for your short-term and mid-term storage items, especially if you are diligent about rotating foods and using them for your normal meal preparation activities. Just be sure to include an oxygen absorber if you plan to store your vacuum sealed bags for over a year.

mayan-calendar

One of the things that really irritates me about the whole 2012 myth is when people go off about “Mayan Doomsday Prophecies”.  Every time you hear some yahoo on television, radio or the internet say: “According to Mayan prophecy” or “According to the Mayan calendar, the world is going to end on December 21st, 2012″ they’re usually peddling some book, DVD or trying to get ratings.   Let me make this abundantly clear….  THE MAYANS MADE NO SUCH PREDICTIONS! There is no Mayan “prophecy”.  The long-count calendar for the 13th baktun simply ends on Dec. 21st, 2012 signifying nothing more than the end of an age…. That’s it.

Enterprising fear merchants and sensationalists simply filled in the rest.

But don’t take my word for it.  Our friend and recent guest on Survival and Beyond (you can listen to the show here); Christopher Nyerges has traveled to the Yucatan peninsula and spent time with the the modern-day Mayans and Mayan historian; Miguel Angel Vergara.  Below is his account of what Vergara  had to say about the Mayan “doomsday prophecy”.  - Ed

By Christopher Nyerges

Mayan historian Miguel Angel Veragas (right) listens as Mayan museum owner speaks the truth about the so-called “Mayan Prophecy”

When I was in Guatemala last winter, one of our impromptu teachers was a man who operated a jade store and Mayan museum. He explained the creation myth to us from the Popul Vuh, and then began to speak about the Long Count of the Mayan calendar.

“But it seems like a lot of people really want the world to end!” he said, as we all laughed. He went on to explain – as my group heard over and over – that there are no predictions from the Mayans about the “end of the world” or doom and gloom. Some poor journalists must have thought they heard “end of the world” when it was only “the end of one calendar cycle.”

“Yes, anything could happen,” he continues, “but it’s good to stick to facts. The Maya don’t say anything about the end of the world. In fact, they have dates listed for several thousand years from now. If they thought the world was coming to an end, why did they use those dates?”

Miguel Angel Vergara

Our main teacher, Miguel Angel Vergara, speaks after the laughter dies down. The December 21, 2012 date completes the 13th Baktun of the Long Count calendar, a 5,125 year long period of time. To the Maya, 13 was the number of completion, transformation, spiritual advancement. So why do so many think of it as a “bad luck” number, Vergara asks us. He offers an answer. Perhaps it is because we know that spiritual transformation is hard work, and it means leaving behind our bad habits and vices. Perhaps they do not want to evolve, he said. To those people, 13 is thought of as “unlucky” because they do not want to give up all the things that hold back their evolution.

Vergara then asked us to list our fears about the 2012 date – either our own fears or fears that we have heard others voice.

The list was predictable, and he wrote them on his white board.

The Unknown.

Death.

Suffering and pain.

Family.

Losing things.

Vergara then addressed these “fears” one by one…

“Yes, the unknown is a mystery”, he told us. He paused, and then emphasized to us that the past is the past, and is over. The future is the unknown. It is only the present that is our real gift. There fore, we need to simply focus on the present, and not let our minds run away in the past or the future.

“Death. Yes, we will all die. We will. And so? Accept it, and then live your life fully.”

“Suffering and pain.” Again, Vergara said, “yes, life is full of suffering and pain. That’s life. It has nothing to do with 2012.”

Concern for our families. Vergara smiled and said, “They will survive without us.” He acknowledged that everyone is concerned about their families and this is natural. But we need not have an imbalanced worry about whether or not someone else might or might not survive a situation. Just carry on with living your life.

Lastly, he addressed the notion of losing things. “We will lose things, he said. That’s life. Whether in catastrophe or in ordinary life, we lose things.”

Vergara paused and said loudly, “Think! You all of us have ALL that you need. You have cars, money, homes, and you still suffer. What are you fearing? You are all like millionaires [sometimes he would say billionaires] compared to most of the people in the rest of the world.”

“We buy what we need at the supermarket,” Vergara told us. “We have lost our inner warrior. We are weak and we are comfortable. We don’t want to fight.”

“We need to change our thinking and become fighters again. Nothing is ever for sure.”

“When I used to visit a friend, we’d go outside and pick oranges outside from the tree. Today, the children are busy texting and they don’t even want to go into the kitchen.”

So what should we do, asked Vergara. What is the best formula to recover this part of ourselves?

He offered many solutions. He described ceremonies that we could perform to reconnect with the earth, and our divinity. He said Love, Real Love, is a part of our solution. Vergara added that “Ninety-nine percent of the time we fail to solve our problems because we don’t knock on the door of divinity. We think that our ego will solve our problems. We know all the things of the outside world, but we don’t know our Self. Are first task is to Know Thy Self.”

He emphasized the need to avoid fear, and go forward with our purpose in life. He explained that most people in the poorer and lesser-developed parts of the world are not worried about “the end of the world” or various 2012 predictions. Why? They are working hard, every day, for basic survival.

“All these 2012 fears,” said Vergara, “are phantoms created by the media. Don’t be driven by fear. Always keep in mind that the main purpose of life is Self-Realization.”

It’s harvest season folks, but whether you grow your own food or not, it’s important to know which kind of food crops keep for a long period of time (up to 2 months) and how to store them in optimal conditions so they’ll retain their quality and remain edible for as long as possible.

By Barbara Pleasant – motherearthnews.com

Here in southwest Virginia, my partner and I take pride in growing and storing most of our fruits and vegetables. Knowing where our food comes from gives us confidence in its goodness, plus we save about $5,000 a year through our gardening and food storage efforts.

There is another benefit, which is the utter convenience of having a self-provisioned home. In early winter when our stores are full, I feel like I’m living in a well-stocked organic grocery store.

We bring many years of experience to this quest, and we’re still learning. Measured by weight, stored garden crops make up more than half of our overall harvest, with every onion and potato just about as fresh as it was the day it came from the garden. Our mix of storage vegetables and fruits varies from year to year and we’ve learned that putting by storage crops is something anyone can do — even if your produce comes from the farmers market. By making use of cold storage spots in your basement or garage, and perhaps adding a seasonal second refrigerator, you can use our charts to easily store 20 storage crops for winter eating using simple, time-tested methods.

Sleeping Quarters for Storage Crops

Success with storage crops hinges on finding methods that convince the crops that they are enjoying a natural period of dormancy in unusually comfortable conditions. This typically involves slowing physiology by controlling respiration (usually by lowering temperature) and/or providing moisture so crisp root vegetables sense they are still in the ground. Some staple storage crops, such as garlic, onions and shallots, need dry conditions to support prolonged dormancy.

Most storage crops need to be cured to enhance their storage potential. During the curing process, potatoes and sweet potatoes heal over small wounds to the skin, garlic and onions form a dry seal over the openings at their necks, and dry beans and grain corn let go of excess moisture that could otherwise cause them to rot. Harvesting, curing and storage requirements vary with each crop — see the charts in How to Harvest, Cure and Store 20 Storage Crops for full details. In my experience, harvesting and curing vegetables properly leads to much more flexibility when it comes to long-term storage conditions.

Storing Potatoes

Seeking out good food storage spots in your home or on your property can lead to interesting discoveries. Take storing potatoes, for example. When we asked the MOTHER EARTH NEWS Facebook community to share favorite ways for storing potatoes in winter, we received dozens of great ideas, including these:

Place cured potatoes in a burlap bag, tuck the bag into a plastic storage bin left open a wee bit, and keep in an unheated basement.

Line plastic laundry baskets with newspapers, with potatoes arranged in layers between more newspapers. Place the packed, covered baskets in an unheated garage.

In the basement, make short towers of potatoes by stacking them between layers of open egg cartons. Cover the towers with cloth to protect the potatoes from light.

Place sorted potatoes in cloth grocery bags that have been lined with black plastic bags, and store in a cold space under the stairs. A similar method: Sort different potatoes into paper bags, then place the bags in milk crates to prevent bruising.

Use an old dresser in a cool room or basement for storing potatoes in winter. Leave the drawers partially open for ventilation.

In a shady spot outdoors, place a tarp over the ground and cover it with an inch of loose straw. Pile on potatoes and cover with more straw, a second tarp, and a 10-inch blanket of leaves or straw.

Bury a garbage can horizontally so that its bottom half is at least 12 inches deep in the soil. Place potatoes in the can with shredded paper or clean straw. Secure the lid with a bungee cord, and cover with an old blanket if needed to shade out sun.

Here in Virginia, we have vole issues that require us to harvest our early spuds promptly, so my buried garbage can gets plenty of use for storing potatoes. Buried coolers or even buried freezer bodies (with machinery removed) can work in the same way.

Storing Crisp Root Vegetables

Theoretically, root vegetables that grow well below ground can be mulched over in fall and dug as needed in winter. This often works well with parsnips, but most gardeners would risk losing much of an overwintered carrot or beet crop to wireworms, voles or other critters. Repeated freezing and thawing of the surface soil damages shallow-rooted turnips and beets. It’s always safer (and more convenient) to harvest root crops, clean them up and secure them in cold storage. In Zones 7 and warmer, you’ll probably need a second refrigerator, as you won’t have naturally cooled spaces that stay below 40 degrees Fahrenheit in winter. In colder winter climates, you have several options:

Bins, buckets or trugs packed with damp sand or sawdust and stashed in cold spots around your homestead, such as under your basement stairs or in an unheated garage or storage shed. This method works amazingly well if you can find a place with temperatures in the 32- to 40-degree range. Every few weeks, dump out containers and repack them, eating any roots that are showing signs of softening.

The previously described method of storing potatoes in a buried garbage container works well for root vegetables, but you’ll need a second one (or a buried cooler) for roots that need moist conditions. Pack these in damp sand or sawdust to maintain high humidity.

Working outside the fridge, the biggest challenge in storing crisp roots is maintaining high humidity without promoting molds and soft rots. That’s where packing materials, including damp sawdust or damp sand, come in handy. Sawdust is clean and lightweight, and the residue can be shaken out into the garden. Sand weighs more but is reusable — simply dry it in the sun and return it to a bucket or bin until you need it in the fall.

A seasonal second refrigerator is worth considering if you have a lot of carrots or beets to store, live in a climate too warm for underground storage, or want to store root vegetables to sell or trade later.

When preparing to store carrots, beets and other root vegetables in plastic bags in the refrigerator, sprinkle in a few drops of water as you pack each bag. Ideally, a few drops of condensation should form inside the bags after they have been well-chilled in the fridge.

Storing Squash

Now for something really easy: storing winter squash. The hard rinds of winter squash protect them from drying out, so all they need is a cool spot where you can check them from time to time. Look for signs of mold, and promptly consume squash that have developed minor blemishes, such as discoloration or soft spots.

Some types of winter squash store longer than others, so it’s important to eat them in proper order.

Squash and pumpkins classified as Cucurbita pepo tend to keep for only two to three months. These include acorn squash, delicata or sweet potato squash, spaghetti squash and most small pumpkins. Eat these first.

Buttercup and kabocha squash (C. maxima) will keep for four months under good conditions, but after two months the fruits should be watched closely for signs of softening or mold. Many squash pie devotees bake up all questionable buttercups in early winter and stash the mashed squash in the freezer. This is a wise move, because it’s far easier to make a pie or batch of muffins if you have frozen squash purée waiting in your freezer than it is to face down a squash the size of your head.

The smooth, hard rinds of butternut squash (C. moschata) help give them the longest storage life (often six months or more), so butternuts should be eaten last. We grow more butternuts than any other winter squash because they are such a cinch to store.

A Second Fridge for Storing Fruit

As owners of six mature fruit trees, we couldn’t manage our harvest without a second refrigerator for storing apples and pears. Our Asian and D’Anjou pears will last to December, with apples going a bit longer — but only if they are refrigerated in containers that retain moisture. So we plug in an old, semi-retired refrigerator in August, then clean it out and turn it off in January. We don’t mix fruits and veggies in the same fridge, because fruits give off so much ethylene gas that they can cause vegetable crops to deteriorate in wacky ways.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn’t exactly approve of second refrigerators, in part because most Americans already maintain more refrigerator space than they need. A more serious issue is the age of many second refrigerators and freezers. Newer models are often three times more efficient than older ones. According to the EPA’s Energy Star statistics, a refrigerator from the 1970s can cost an extra $200 a year to operate, while a 1980s vintage refrigerator may cost $70 more to run compared with a new model.

We will eventually upgrade our elderly, part-time fruit fridge to an efficient Energy Star model, but meanwhile, it earns its keep. Storing apples in a refrigerator often greatly improves their flavor, which is definitely the case with our midseason ‘Enterprise’ apples — three weeks in the fridge changes their flavor from good to spectacular. Sometimes how you store a crop is just as important as how you grow it.

I don’t mean to make self-provisioning sound too easy. Only top-quality produce should be stored, and every season some crop I planned to store either fails or doesn’t make the grade. These losses are soon forgotten as August and September whiz by in a blur, with one food storage project after another. Then October comes and we’re amazed at what we have: a basement brimming with homegrown winter squash, onions and garlic; a well-stocked pantry with organic dried beans, peppers and canned goods; and the fridge and freezer full, save for enough space for two turkeys grown by local farmers. If this is not the good life, I don’t know what is.

Not too long ago, I was a guest on Freedom Fighter Radio and the host (Jim Stach) asked me about food storage preparedness.  Of course I went into the usual rhetoric about the importance of having a 6-12 month supply of food on hand for a disaster or collapse situation, store what you eat, eat what you store, rotate your stock, yada, yada, yada…  Next he asked me exactly how to store grains, beans and other dry goods to keep them from spoiling as well as prevent insects, rodents and other pests out.

It occurred to me that hardly anyone ever asks the how-to questions in regards to storing food.  I typically only get asked why food storage is a good idea and how much and what kinds of food to stockpile.  And to be honest, when you’ve been around the prepper/survival scene for any length of time, you invariably get asked the same questions over and over again and your responses become rote and automatic.  So it was refreshing to be asked to go into detail about the methods and procedures of storing bulk food, what oxygen absorbers and desiccants are, why they’re used, etc (yeah, I know, not exactly riveting radio, but it’s important stuff to know).

Not too long after that interview, I cam across this three part series by our friend “The Survival Woman” at Backdoor Survival about the basics of food storage and I thought it was an excellent primer for my Survival and Beyond readers/listeners, so here you go…

Parts 2 and 3 coming soon.

By The Survival Woman

Oxygen absorbers. You have heard about them and if you have done even the most basic research into long term food storage, you know that they are a necessary component when sealing up dry goods for the long haul. But what are they? Why are they necessary? And how are they used?

Learning about Long Term Storage

The very first item I purchased for my survival pantry was a 25 pound sack of pinto beans. Of course back then, I thought I would simply store the big bag in the garage and let it sit there until I needed it – you know, set it and forget it. Luckily, I did my research and learned first and foremost that beans indeed have a shelf life and will turn as hard as rocks if not properly packaged and maintained in a cool, moisture free environment. Who knew?

The light bulb came on as I was reading John Hill’s book How to Live on Wheat. It was this little book that taught me not only about wheat (living and dead) but about storage containers, Mylar bags, desiccants, and yes, oxygen absorbers. So, being the smarty pants that I am, I purchased a package of Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers and, with the help of Survival Husband, sent the beans flying as we learned the secrets of packaging. (You can read all about this adventure in my article titled Getting Prepared Week 20: Hands on with Mylar Bags, Beans and the FoodSaver.)

Which brings me around to the present. Never one to believe something unless I check things out myself, I wanted to know what was in these little packets and how could I learn to use them effectively for long term food storage.

What are oxygen absorbers made of?

The small oxygen absorber packets contain an iron powder that is enclosed in an outer wrapper that lets oxygen and moisture in. The outer wrapper is strong enough to prevent leakage of the the powder back out into your food.

How to they work?

In the process of sucking up moisture, the iron in the absorber starts to rust. This creates oxidation and before you know it, in a well sealed container, 99.99% of the oxygen is used up. Any space or air left in the container is nitrogen – not oxygen – which is not a bad thing because insects can not thrive in pure nitrogen.

So, in simple terms, the little packet sucks up all of the oxygen from the air within the container in which it is placed.

Factoid: Air is about 21 percent oxygen, 78 percent nitrogen and 1% other gasses. Did you know that?

What about storage containers?

Still with me? We are getting to the hard part. As you do your research, you will hear over and over again that you should use oxygen absorbers in sealed Mylar bags. And yes, it is true that they work extremely well when used with vacuum packaged Mylar bags.

But – and this is a big but – they can be used successfully to block out oxygen with other types of packaging, too. All of the following will work:

Metal cans with sealed lids. Great if you have access to a canner or a local community kitchen. For most of us, however, this is not a realistic and cost effective solution
Mason jars with proper canning lids. This is one of my favorites especially since I have a special attachment for my food saver that allows me to vacuum seal the mason jars quickly and easily. And, just a personal thing, but I love looking at all of the products peeking out of those glass jars.
Mylar bags. These are heavy duty foil bags lined with a special plastic.
Vacuum sealed bags (such as the Food Saver bags). While not as heavy as the Mylar, these are much easier to handle especially if you already have the Food Saver machine itself.
Plastic buckets with gamma seals. These can be used alone or in combination with other Mylar or other bags such as those from the food saver.
PETE plastic bottles with airtight, screw on lids.
What is the proper way to use oxygen absorbers?

There are just a few precautions that you need to be aware of when using oxygen absorbers.

The most important precaution is to limit the unused packets from exposure to the air. Take out only what you are going to use in the next 15 minutes or so and seal the rest up in a jar with a screw top lid. Don’t put them in a zip lock bag because they will immediately suck up the residual oxygen and become useless.
A good rule of thumb is to use one 300 cc oxygen absorber for each gallon of product. For larger containers, you can purchase larger, 2000 cc oxygen absorbers which are ideal for 5 or 6 gallon buckets.
Be mindful of the little pink pill. Most reputable vendors will include a little pick pill with their package of absorbers. If the pill is blue, the absorbers are toast so don’t use them. However, if they are just starting to turn – not quite pink and not quite blue – they are probably okay since the change of color can happen in as little as 10 or 15 minutes.
Another good test of their viability is to pick one up an hold it. It may feel warm. It will also feel soft and powdery, like a little pillow. If it gets real hot and uncomfortable, it is in full out working mode and has probably been exposed to the air for too long to be usable. In this case it may also start to feel hard and brick like. Toss it.
Oxygen absorbers themselves have a limited shelf life, even when sealed. Only purchase an amount that you will use within a year.
Note: If you start to do some research on your own, prepare to be confused. You will find that some sources feel you should use a larger quantity of oxygen absorbers when packaging dried pasta and beans versus packaging grains, flours, and rice. The reason for this is that the latter are more dense so there is less oxygen to get rid of. You can come to your own conclusion but the overwhelming advice I received from respected vendors was that 300 cc’s per gallon or 2000 cc’s per bucket would do just fine.

A few other pointers

Almost anything can be packaged using oxygen absorbers and they are so inexpensive, there is no reason not to use them. There are some things, however, that should be packaged without them. They are sugar and salt. Why? Well the sugar will turn to a brick of concrete and the salt simply does not need anything special to keep it preserved. It too may clump.

In addition, sprouting seeds need oxygen to stay alive (and ultimately germinate) so you would be defeating your purpose if you sealed them up with an oxygen absorber.

A bag sealed with product plus an oxygen absorber may or may not turn brick like in a day or two or even up to a week. The ability to fully compress is dependent upon factors such as head room and the amount of air that was sucked out during the sealing process. This is not a problem in spite of what you may read on the internet. If you have used an oxygen absorber sufficient for the size of your packaging, the oxygen will be gone. The extra air is simply nitrogen and it will not harm your food. Of course, if it makes you feel better, you could open the package and start all over again but that is not really necessary for anything but your peace of mind.

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America ‘s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, “the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

By James Smith

In trying to make sense of the ammunition purchases, which by the way, DHS/ICE canceled the orders for blank .308 rounds. 25,000 rounds, I decided to match apples to apples for fairness.

What I found fails the smell test of common sense and reason. But we are talking about the largest grab of brass and lead of all times by a man who only knows how a weapon fires from his time in “Pock Is Stan”.

Big Sis has been in a request for another 120,000,000 rounds of .40 S&W ammunition. And this time, it is to be CLEARLY used and segregated from duty ammunition. How clearly marked? From the RFI :

Can company produce ammunition with cartridge cases that are uniquely colored to ready distinguish them from DHS duty ammunition. Can company produce individual packaging boxes uniquely colored to ready distinguish them from DHS duty ammunition.
Can company produce training ammunition capable of accuracy comparable to current duty ammunition standards?
Can company manufacturer 30 million rounds of this training ammunition annually?
Remember, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is the largest investigative agency in the Department of Homeland Security, and is responsible for enforcing the nation’s immigration and customs laws. ICE has more than 20,000 employees working in 400 offices in the U.S. and around the world.

It is also charged with detaining the criminal elements of the illegal aliens that cross our borders. So naturally, the ammunition would be used to keep those ruffians under lock and key.

However, just using the large multi-year purchases, there is a problem with their ammunition uses.

Look at this chart:

Caliber     Year Bought    Sum                       Used to date         Sum remaining
.40 S&W   2009                 160,000,000    40,000,000         40,000,000
.40 S&W   2011                  140,000,000    70,000,000         210,000,000
.40 S&W   2012                  30,000,000      30,000,000         90,000,000
.223 SD    2012                  40,000,000       40,000,000         160,000,000
.223 EP    2012                  35,000,000        35,000,000         140,000,000

More purchases can be found HERE. Just for the record, the 2009 purchase was a mere $38,227,600

What this means is that for the 20,000 employees of ICE, they will have at their disposal 215,000,000 rounds of ammunition, to detain 33,330 inmates for Fiscal Year 2011.

What happened to last year’s 215 million rounds? Or the year before that? Perhaps it went to training? Not necessarily the case. This is from an email I received from H.R.P.

CBP agents fire 72 rounds of handgun ammo per qualification. Multiply that by 20,000 and you get 1,440,000. For the four quals each year you arrive at 5,760,000 rounds of handgun ammo for CBP alone. This does not include issue of ammo for practice and proficiency.

There is enough annual ammo for each employee to do practice/proficiency 37 times of what the qualification ammunition is needed. The President doesn’t even golf that much!

As I started the article, a comparison of apples needs to be made. The nearest body that would be closest to ICE is the Bureau of Prisons. From their website:

“The Bureau has approximately 37,700 highly motivated individuals working in 115 correctional institutions across the country, and approximately 217,000 Federal offenders are confined by BOP.”

It should be noted that BOP has 17,000 more employees, manages 6.5 times more inmates, and in less facilities.

So what are the BOP’s ammunition purchases since 2003? Mind you, the chart above is only since 2009:

Jan 14, 2011 $40,000

200,000 rounds, 9mm Luger, 115 grain, jacketed-hollow-point ammunition.
Dec 3, 2008 $7,252,000 5 years total – Total ammunition 24,900,000 rounds (4,980 rounds for 2012 alone)

9MM Luger 124 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point (1,000,000 each);

Cartridge, 12 Gauge #6 Shot Size 2-3/4″ Length, 3 Dram Equivalent: 160,000
Cartridge, 12 Gauge #7-1/2 Shot Size 2-3/4″ Length, 3 Dram Equivalent: 160,000 rounds;
Cartridge, 12 Gauge #8 Shot Size 2-3/4″ Length, 3 Dram Equivalent: 160,000 rounds
Cartridge, 12 Gauge Rifled Slug, 1 ounce weight: 80,000 rounds;
Cartridge .223 55 Grain, Full Metal Jacket: 1,500,000 rounds;
Cartridge, 30-06 168 Grain, JHP Boat Tail: 80,000 rounds; and
Cartridge, .308 168 Grain JHP Boat Tail: 80,000 rounds

Grand total of cost for the last 10 years: 7,574,517, or 1/5 the cost of one ammunition purchase by DHS/ICE.

DHS is a bloated entity, hell bent on scaring innocent people. Airports, trains, online – the very agency that is to “protect” us from terror, terrorizes us all.

“Obey, or it will be the FEMA camps for you!” may be the next threat out of some jackbooted thug who just falls into the latest line of useful idiots of the tyrants of history.

Fear not though. All tyrants fall. The 21st century versions will fall just as well, if not harder and faster. Keep the faith.

With a global as well as domestic economic crisis looming, further hostilities in the Middle East, the likelihood of war with Iran (possibly sparking World War III) and turmoil surrounding the coming presidential election, we are indeed living in very precarious times.  Couple that with the DHS continuing to arm itself and various government agencies to the teeth, the possibility of martial law in America is looking more and more likely.

The following article outlines what to expect when martial law rolls into your neighborhood and how to avoid capture.  Big thanks go out to James Smith (aka The Covert Prepper) from Survival and Beyond’s supporting Network; Prepper Podcast Radio.

How to Avoid Getting Trapped in FEMA Camps

By James Smith,

I wrote a news story recently called “How technology will send you to hell in the FEMA camps” It was wildly popular and raised the question in my mind, “How do I prevent my family from going to the camps?”

< LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST BY CLICKING HERE >

The first thing is to know what to expect before hand. While people think about the dollar dropping to nothing, or an Obama re-election, you need to consider the most pressing signs of a pending martial law.

How pending?

About 15 minutes or less away from being put into a bus.

Now there are people who would look forward to 3 hots and a cot. And there are some who would actively encourage you to go to the camps. There was an article that said that social services folks are encourage self-sufficient people to use food stamps, and that the self-sufficient mentallity was preventing more people from being on food stamps.

But we aren’t those people. We are the kinds that enjoy freedom.

So what do we look for?

Using the backbone of a military operation, you must make the enemy (that would be you) deaf, dumb, and blind.

What does that mean? It means you must be blind: Not knowing what to expect, how many men are in the operation, and what your final destination will be. This means that the operation will most likely take place in the middle of the night. When they roll up, mega watt lights will be shone onto the neighborhood. This disorientates you as well as illuminate your home for movement. This also means the power to your block will be secured. Depending on the size of the town, perhaps several blocks at once. That would be a good thing. Read on…

Deaf means that you won’t know what is going on. Loud noises, such as bullhorns shouting orders, diesel engines running, and people yelling at you to go here or there. It also means you won’t be able to receive texts or cell phone service.

Dumb, or mute, means you won’t be able to call anyone, tweet, post a Facebook update, send an email of warning. Imagine if the events took place in Chicago. How quick would such a warning get spread all over Facebook or Twitter. It would “trends” quickly and the element of surprise would be gone.
Making you deaf and dumb is as simple as securing the internet with the Internet Kill Switch. That ends Facebook, Twitter, and Email.

And all you have to do to secure the cell phone or land-line service is to have the US military show up at the local phone office and have them secure all lines in the place. Turning the power off would be as effective as cutting lines, but once power is restored you could have normal service. Infrastructure would be maintained.

Your neighborhood is now deaf, dumb, and blind.

You need to buy yourself some time. Not much time, but just enough time.
And you have about 5 minutes to do it in. Maybe less.

What do you need?

You need to make an alert when you lose power. This is from my site:

“I took a small wall wart that is rated at 12 volts and about 100 mA. I attached it to the power and ground part of a small 12v relay I bought from radio shack. I then took a 9v battery connector and a piezeo alarm and put it on the connectors of the relay that if there is no power to the relay – will allow current to flow. The way you find that is to put the red wire of the connector to the relay, and one of the leads from the alarm to the opposite side of the relay. Connect the black wire and the other alarm wire together.
Provided you have a 9v battery on the connector you should hear a sound. If not, change to a different spot on the relay. So when you apply power by plugging in the wall wart, the sound goes off. Remove the wart or turn off the power, you get an alarm sound. “

When I was in the Navy, any time we lost power we went into an immediate Security Alert. And you should too. When that alarm sounds (Put it in your bedroom as close to the bed as possible), after you pull the alarm out of the socket, get up and hide the children,

And that means you have to have pre-arranged hiding spots.

A window seat is a great way to start. Make a bench, bolt it to the wall under the bedroom window, and make small doors for the child to hide in. You can do the same for your room. Tell the children just to go if they are ever told, and to stay very quiet until you tell them to come out. And only you. Pretend to be someone else and see if they come to them. Soldiers may be very sneaky and say, “Your parents told me to get you. Come on, let’s go to them!”

Practice this frequently so they are aware of what needs to be done, and to be done in the dark, and to be done without question.

If you can’t make a window bench, then fill your closet up with “boxes”. These boxes are “stacked” to make it look like a storage area, but it’s just a shell. If you are in a manufactured home or a single story home, go to the closet and cut open a hatch to the crawl space. Have a black blanket so you can hide under the blanket to stay concealed. USE YOUR IMAGINATION!

The idea is that soldiers don’t have mchu time to search each home. They have to keep moving onto the next house. Once they leave and the power goes back on – DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING. If the bathroom light was on, leave it on. The smart meters will detect and record ANY changes and it will alert someone that there are people within the home!

Drones will be used to monitor communities and neighborhoods. Going out after dark is the same as going out during the day.

If you go out at night, take a night vision capable video camera. Put black platic around the IR lamp that is usually beneath the camera’s lens. This will prevent the drone from seeing the IR light, but you’ll be able to see the IR lights on the drone in the dark.

If you feel froggy, shoot down the drone AS IT LEAVES! The flight will be level and of constant speed, enough for you to get a bead on it. It’s difficult to tell where the shot came from, and you’ll get some satisfaction of taking one down. These thing are expensive and if they have to redirect one away from another area, that means someone else is getting a break.

If you have to move from one place to another, do so during a rain or thunderstorm. These conditions make drone flying very difficult and seeing anything of value VERY difficult. Yes, it is horrible conditions for you, but at least you will be free.

If, during the day, you see people wandering through your town, ignore them and hide. They may be “spies” looking for the last holdouts. As a rule of thumb, 8 to 80, blind, crippled, or crazy, means anyone may be a threat. Don’t kill them, just let them pass through. Watch them to see if they use a radio. IF they do use one, listen for codes such as, “Secure”, “Subjects”, “Natives”, or “SitRep (Situation Report)”

Such phrases would mean that they are looking for you as wolves in sheep’s clothing. DO NOTHING towards them. Get their photos if you can but remain hidden.

Satellites may detect heat from fireplaces, so use the covert cooking methods like solar cooking, Hay Box cooking or Creveche. If you can, light a match in the sewers to eliminate any flammable gasses, and cook down there. The streets should hide the heat signature well enough, especially in the day. Solar cooking using the back of a pickup may be a good decision as it may imitate the accumulated heat of a canopy.

You will be on your own. You will be the deciding factor if you live free or die free.

But it’s your decision. No one else makes it for you.

And that’s why it’s called FREEDOM.

This week I welcome extreme self reliance expert; Christopher Nyerges to the show.  Christopher runs The School of Self-Reliance and is the author of several survival and self reliance books including: “How to Survive Anywhere”, “The Self-Sufficient Home”, and “Extreme Simplicity”. We discuss “primitive” living skills and “living with purpose”, the survival/preparedness learning process, the importance of community and “people skills” in a survival situation, the brainwashing of our culture, as well as other important issues.

But first, I report on the recent violence in the Middle East and the growing threat of  yet another false-flag war (this time with Iran).  I also cover Judge Katherine Forrest’s permanent injunction against the NDAA and the attempts by the Obama administration to reverse Judge Forrest’s ruling, as well as an overview of Obama’s Executive Order attack (900 E.O.s so far and counting) on our liberty!

Under the guise of “saving the planet”, the United Nation’s Agenda 21 (the far-reaching plan to control every aspect of America’s natural resources) includes what areas of the county Americans will be allowed to live an recreate in the future.  As I have mentioned numerous times on the show, they already have the areas mapped out which indicate the “forbidden zones” and areas where “habitation” will be allowed (see map to left) and will lead to the abolition of private property.

Under George Bush the elder, the United States signed into compliance with Agenda 21 at the “U.N. Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro back in 1992 and in 2011 Obama signed the “White House Rural Council” executive order (E.O. 13575) placing all of our rural lands and national resources (and about 16% of the population) under federal control.

Section One of 13575 states the following:

Section 1. Policy. Sixteen percent of the American population lives in rural counties. Strong, sustainable rural communities are essential to winning the future and ensuring American competitiveness in the years ahead. These communities supply our food, fiber, and energy, safeguard our natural resources, and are essential in the development of science and innovation. Though rural communities face numerous challenges, they also present enormous economic potential. The Federal Government has an important role to play in order to expand access to the capital necessary for economic growth, promote innovation, improve access to health care and education, and expand outdoor recreational activities on public lands.

In other words: the “important role” the Federal Government has to play is in dictating to you how best to manage YOUR land, as according to the Rural Council states that continuing to allow the private stewardship of natural resources is an “unsustainable” practice.

For several years now, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) headed by international interests, such as Germany’s; ICLEI (the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives) have been implementing Agenda 21 “harmonization” through imposing regulations in every state and county in the nation  - except for Alabama, which recently sent ICLEI packing with the “Due Process for Property Rights Act” (SB 477) which was reported on Survival and Beyond back in June: Alabama – First State to Ban Agenda 21.

“The State of Alabama and all political subdivisions may not adopt or implement policy recommendations that deliberately or inadvertently infringe or restrict private property rights without due process, as may be required by policy recommendations originating in, or traceable to ‘Agenda 21,’ ” the law states, adding a brief background on the UN plan hatched at the 1992 “Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro.

This is a major “sleeper” issue that is untouched by the mainstream media and under-reported by the alternative press, but if it continues to proceed unchecked, we could find ourselves living in an America where private property is abolished, where we are told where to live and ALL resources are strictly controlled and dispensed by the government and their globalist keepers!

The following is a brief article by frequent Survival and Beyond guest and strenuous Agenda 21 opponent; Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh:

I am not sure when subsequent generations, our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will no longer be permitted access in zones marked off-limits to human habitation and trespassing in accordance with the dictates of UN Agenda 21 and the now infamous Wildlands Project map.

The map was produced by Dr. Michael Coffman, editor of Discerning the Times Digest and NewsBytes and CEO of Sovereignty International, to stop the ratification of the international treaty on Convention on Biological Diversity one hour before the scheduled cloture and ratification vote. (Congressional Record S13790)

The mandate of the Convention of Biological Diversity draws buffer zones, core reserves and corridors to protect biodiversity. Areas in green will allow housing. Areas in yellow will be buffer zones, highly regulated with no homes and possible hiking. Red areas will be core reserves and corridors off-limits to human access and human habitation. There is already limited use of red areas via no management or resource harvesting through Wilderness, Critical Habitat, and Roadless Areas.

Dr. Coffman’s map also includes the Border 21/La Paz Sidebar Agreement of NAFTA, 120 mile wide international zone of cooperation, and Indian and military reservations.

The idea of a One World Government/Order and Agenda 21 has been around since the turn of the 20th century. To see written evidence, just look at the back of a one-dollar bill. Featured prominently under the Masonic pyramid are the Latin words, Novus Ordo Seclorum, the New World Order.

It was not until 1992, after numerous United Nations conferences around the globe spanning decades and a concerted effort by third world governments led by individuals like Maurice Strong and Gro Harlem Brundtland that the UN Agenda 21 became reality at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This conference produced three documents: The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (an international treaty), the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (an international treaty), and UN Agenda 21 (not a treaty but a “soft law”).

President Herbert Walker Bush signed along with 178 countries but refused to sign the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity because it required transfer of technology without recognition of proprietary rights. However, President Bush said, “It is the sacred principles enshrined in the UN Charter to which the American people will henceforth pledge their allegiance.” I am sure the American people were very surprised or perhaps totally unaware that a U.S. President would pledge allegiance to a foreign body instead of the U.S. Constitution.

Last week, U.S. District Judge; Kathrine Forrest issued a permanent injunction against article 1021 of the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) which allows for the use of military force against American citizens and indefinite detention absent habeas corpus and without due process.   Judge Forrest ruled that  the language of the NDAA was too vague and opened the door for violations of our First and Fifth Amendment rights. In less than 24 hours the Obama administration filed an appeal on the ruling and was granted a temporary stay on the injunction until Sept. 28th by Appeals Court Judge Raymond Lohier.

Obama continues to insist that he will never use the NDAA against American citizens, yet his actions speak volumes to the contrary.  If Obama is so dead set against detaining U.S. citizens and violating their rights to due process and freedom of speech, then why is he so insistent in keeping the provision?  Moreover, why would he fight so vigorously against this federal court ruling?

We have three branches of government and a system of checks and balances for a reason.  The Executive Branch cannot overpower the Judicial.  If this isn’t a struggle to establish dictatorial power, then I don’t know what is.  Let us also not forget that Obama has no compunctions against summarily executing American citizens abroad without the benefit of due process and has also added other American citizens on his drone “kill list“!

The Bill of Rights cannot simply be legislated away with the stroke of a pen, but through the NDAA and the miasma of executive orders Obama has signed throughout his term as president, it seems that’s exactly what he’s trying to do!

From RT.com:

Only hours after a US district judge made permanent an injunction that bans the indefinite military detention of Americans without charge, the White House said they’d appeal to continue their efforts to keep a controversial new law on the books.

On Thursday, the Obama administration acknowledged that they plan to challenge a ruling made only a day earlier by US District Court Judge Katherine Forrest that concreted an injunction she issued four months prior on a provision included in the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act , or NDAA. In May, Judge Forrest said the indefinite detention statute in the NDAA failed to “pass constitutional muster” and ordered a temporary block. On Wednesday, she made that injunction permanent, but not without raising objection once again from the Executive Branch.
“First Amendment rights are guaranteed by the Constitution and cannot be legislated away,” Forrest wrote on Wednesday. “This Court rejects the Government’s suggestion that American citizens can be placed in military detention indefinitely, for acts they could not predict might subject them to detention.”

Judge Forrest’s decision this week reaffirms her earlier ruling that prohibits the US government from abiding by the indefinite detention provision in the NDAA, a clause that allows for American citizens to be detained and held on the suspicion of supporting terrorists “or associated forces” until a very vague time frame described as only “until the end of hostilities.” After US President Barack Obama signed the legislation into law on New Year’s Eve, a team of journalists and activists challenged it in court.

The White House had originally threatened to veto the act if it came onto President Obama’s desk, but the commander-in-chief signed it none the less on December 31, 2011. When he inked his name to the bill, the president acknowledged that he was authorizing it, “despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation and prosecution of suspected terrorists.” On Thursday, the White House affirmed that they will continue their legal battle to ensure that those certain provisions remain intact.

Carl Mayer, an attorney with The Mayer Law Group and legal counsel for the plaintiffs in the case, spoke with RT shortly after he found out that the White House plans to appeal the ruling. Despite the Obama administration’s warning, Mr. Mayer calls Judge Forrest’s latest decision “a huge and historic victory for democracy” and remains optimistic that further administrative efforts to challenge the injunction will be thwarted by the Justice Department.

The Obama administration, Mr. Mayer says, “plan to appeal this to the Second Circuit and probably ultimately to the Supreme Court. We think this is ill advised because it contradicts President Obama’s campaign statements, it contradicts his criticism of his own legislation in his signing statement and he knows, as a former constitutional law professor, that this is wholly unconstitutional.”

“Because the language is so vague in this law,” Mr. Mayer explains, “if any journalist or activist is seen as reporting or offering opinions about groups that could somehow be linked not just to al-Qaeda but to any opponent of the United States or even opponents of our allies” they could be imprisoned indefinitely.

Mr. Mayer adds that “When Congress passes a law that is so vague, [it] always has a chilling effect on everyone’s speech and that is not permitted under our Constitution.”

“You can’t chill a journalist’s speech; you can’t chill your speech or your colleague’s speech or your producer’s speech or other journalists who you work with by holding a Sword of Damocles over your head by threatening you of being detained by the military. That is something that you have a fundamental right to be protected by,” the lawyer says.

Also up for debate, says Mayer, is the NDAA’s violation of the Constitution’s right to due process.

“Let’s assume they thought a report,” says Mayer, “is engaged in expressive activity that supports terrorists.” Without Judge Forrest’s injunction, that activity could warrant not a federal investigation, but a federal intervention — one that ends up with a suspect behind prison indefinitely. “And that is not how the Constitution works,” he says. “The Constitution gives you those fundamental bedrock protections.”
“You have a right to prove that that’s not true in front of a jury of your peers,” Mayer says.

Separate from the District Court case against the NDAA, several states have introduced legislation on their own that blocks usage of the indefinite detention provision on a local level. In April, the Virginia legislature voted to approve an act that authorizes law enforcement agents within the state to reject the controversial detention provisions included in the NDAA.Similar efforts were introduced in Washington, Utah and elsewhere.
Mr. Mayer says that while he expects to go back to court to fight the White House’s efforts to install the indefinite detention clause on a permanent basis, so far it seems as if their case is for a lost cause.

“I think they are ill advised to appeal this at all,” he tells RT. “The Obama administration has now lost three times. They lost the temporary injunction, they lost the motion for reconsideration and they lost the hearing for permanent injunction. I say three strikes and you’re out.”
